For over 1,000 years the population of the region produced grapes and excellent wines, such as Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood) and Egri Leányka (Maiden of Eger, or the Rizling).  The oldest wine-cellars are more than 400 years old (Szépasszonyvölgy), but new ones are carved into the volcanic ash mountains to this day.

Thermal springs were discovered in the 15th century. Since those times Eger is a frequented spa for visitors from neighbouring countries and from faraway places as well.
